International news agencies claim that at least 68 people died, dozens were seriously injured.. It is also assumed that many others are missing.

“Many people were rescued from the river, but some are still missing,” said Amit Jala, head of the hospital where the victims are being sent.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, quoted by the Times of India, said that during the collapse there will be about 150 people on the bridge.

This 230-meter bridge across the Machkha River in the city of Morbi was built during British rule in the 19th century. It has been closed for work for the past six months and reopened last week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already indicated that rescue teams should be “urgently” mobilized into place and announced that relatives of the victims will receive compensation.

Meanwhile, the Government of India reported that assembled a special team to investigate the tragedy.
