Brazilian Press Association to sue Bolsonaro for Covid-19 exposure

The association, known as ABI, accused Bolsonaro of not respecting health safety distance from journalists, and took off his mask at a press conference broadcast on television in the capital city of Brasília, where he announced that he had tested positive for Covid-19.

ABI’s statement accused Bolsonaro of endangering the lives of the journalists present. “The state cannot witness the continuation of irresponsible behavior and is a real crime against public health, without reacting,” said association president, Paulo Jeronimo de Souza.

Three TV stations – CNN Brazil, TV record and Brazilian TV – Present at the press conference. Brazilian CNN reporter Leandro Magalhaes will be tested for the virus on Wednesday, and is working from home until he gets the results.
After Tuesday’s press conference, Congressman Marcelo Freixo tweeted that he filed a lawsuit against Bolsonaro with the Federal Law Office. “The president violated Articles 131 and 132 of the Criminal Code by removing his mask during an interview in which he announced that he had the corona virus,” Freixo said.

Bolsonaro’s office did not respond to requests for comment.

Given Bolsonaro’s diagnosis, the minister who recently made contact with the president has also been tested by Covid-19 for the past two days. Government Secretary Luiz Eduardo Ramos, Regional Development Minister Rogério Marinho and Braga Netto Chief of Staff were declared negative, according to the office of each minister.

Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, Defense Minister General Fernando Azevedo, and Government Secretary General Jorge Oliveira, were also tested for the virus and are awaiting the results, according to their office.
