Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized this Wednesday due to abdominal distress and constant hiccups, forcing him to cancel all official scheduled appointments.

According to a statement released by Palácio do Planalto, Bolsonaro, “under the guidance of his medical team, he entered the Armed Forces hospital in Brasilia this Wednesday to undergo tests to find out the cause of the hiccups.”

The Brazilian government office also reports that “on the recommendation of a doctor, the president will be monitored for 24 to 48 hours, not necessarily in a hospital,” stressing that “he is excited and well.”

According to Brazilian press reports, Jair Bolsonaro suffered from reflux for some time and complained of constant hiccups for several days – and he himself demonstrated this situation live on video broadcast on the Internet.

Globo said Bolsonaro’s agenda for this Wednesday included meeting with the presidents of the Senate and the Federal Supreme Court to “calm relations between the authorities of the Republic” in light of their allegations against electronic voting machines.

Among other commitments, Bolsonaro was scheduled to attend a meeting of the National Coordinating Committee on the Covid-19 Pandemic this morning.
