Belgian politician wears One Love armband at the FIFA World Cup

The Belgian foreign minister wore an armband that read “One Love” when she met FIFA President Gianni Infantino at the World Cup match against Canada on Wednesday.

Haja Lahbib was photographed wearing the colorful armband, considered a symbol of inclusiveness and diversity, which FIFA banned the captains of seven European teams, including Belgium, from wearing at the World Cup in Qatar.

They wanted to use it as a rebuke for human rights in the host country.

Lahbib tweeted a photo of herself wearing a bracelet on her left arm, writing, “My heart goes out to our red devils!”

FIFA has warned seven European federations that players will be fined if they wear an armband.

Germany players covered their mouths in front of a team photo ahead of the opening match of the World Cup, where Japan lost 2-1, to protest FIFA’s crackdown on the One Love headband.

“It was a sign from the team, from us,” said Germany coach Hansi Flick, “that FIFA is shutting us up.”

German Interior Minister Nancy Faezer, who is also in charge of sports, also wore the “One Love” armband in the stands of her country’s match, sitting next to Infantino. Phizer posted a photo of herself with the hashtag #OneLove.
