OUR The previous balance indicated five dead and 20 missing, as well as 32 injured.

The number of missing persons was initially estimated based on testimony from travel agencies and family members, the fire department said.

The accident occurred at about 11:00 local time (14:00 in mainland Portugal) on Lake Furnas, a tourist site of the municipality of Capitolio, when a large block of stone fell from a height of five meters into three boats.

Nine of the victims were hospitalized, according to firefighters, who arrived at the scene with various equipment and a team of divers. The search was stopped at night for security reasons and resumed the next day.

According to firefighters, the cause of the accident was heavy rain that fell in recent days in the southeast of Brazil.

The city of Capitolio, located about 280 km from Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais (southeast), is a year-round tourist destination thanks to its impressive canyons that can be visited by boat.
