The British and Portuguese prime ministers are preparing to close on Monday in London a global political agreement governing Portuguese-British bilateral relations after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.

“A final agreement is being prepared between the two countries, with particular attention to the areas of defense, foreign policy, science, higher education and climate change, in particular the oceans,” Foreign Minister Joao Gomes told Lusa. Cravinho at the end of his visit to the Royal Brompton Hospital in London, in which he accompanied the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

The signing of this agreement depends only on the recovery of António Costa, who had to cancel his presence at the June 10 celebration in Braga from Friday to today.

However, an executive source said the Portuguese chief executive “continues to record a very favorable recovery” and the most likely scenario is that he will be able to travel to London on Sunday, arriving in the early evening.

Moreover, this Saturday, the President of the Republic, in the presence of journalists, took for granted that António Costa will travel to London on Sunday “to meet with the Prime Minister of Great Britain on Monday.”

The meeting with Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street is scheduled for Monday at 13:00.

Even with regard to the bilateral agreement under preparation, the Foreign Secretary indicated that cooperation in the commercial sphere is governed by Brexit, the agreement on the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

Thus, Portuguese-British trade relations can be deepened if they comply with the agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
