The drawing is explained as a sketch of another work and is believed to have been drawn at the end of 1882, when Van Gogh was 29 years old and worked for two years as an artist. The figure shows an elderly peasant hunched over in a wooden chair with his head in his hands. In the collection of the Van Gogh Museum there was already another similar work with the name “Worn” (translated into “Peasant Degastado”).

Typically, the museum receives up to 300 requests a year from people who believe they own the lost Van Gogh. However, few of them end up in the museum – and even fewer are believed to be true.
In this case, the study of the authenticity of the design was facilitated by the fact that it never left the property of the same family, passing from generation to generation, and was acquired in 1910 from the famous collector Henk Bremmer.
The quality of the paper, the type of carpenter’s pencil, and even the distinctive features of how the artist hung the paper on the tablet served as additional evidence.
