UEFA admits a re-wording of the offside rule after a controversial goal by Kilian Mbappé brought France a 2-1 victory over Spain in the League of Nations final.

The French striker goes ahead, but the attempt to cut off Eric Garcia confirms the move, which was justified by the English referee Anthony Taylor at the time.

UEFA Refereeing Director Roberto Rosetti believes that Anthony Taylor “made the right decision based on the existing law and its official interpretation, as the player deliberately intervened to play the ball.”

However, the official agreed that the current interpretation of the law “appears to be contrary to the spirit of the law, which does not allow any player to take advantage of their position.”

Thus, Rosetti acknowledges that UEFA recognizes that “there are ways to improve the wording of the rule”. “I have already talked with my colleagues from FIFA and IFAB (Association Council, guardians of the rules), and this will be discussed at the next meeting of IFAB,” he said.

The group that determines the rules of the game will meet on October 27, and it is also planned to analyze the rule according to which the goalkeeper must have one foot on the line when a penalty is awarded, and whether five substitutions remain or if back to three. The final decision will take place in March 2022.
