Bremen coach Markus Anfang stepped down from his post this Saturday after Germany’s tax authorities launched an investigation into the suspicion of forging a Covid-19 vaccination certificate.

Anfang denied the accusations, but said he made the decision not to pressure the club, which plays in the 2nd division.

“Given the pressure on the club and the team, as well as on me and my family, I have decided to step down,” Marcus Anfang said in a statement.

In addition to the head coach, Florian Junge’s assistant also resigned.

“Marcus and Florian have shown responsibility in their decision given the turmoil that has gripped the club in recent weeks,” said Bremen Managing Director Frank Baumann.

The problem began when, after player Marco Friedl tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Anfang submitted the vaccination certificate to the competent medical institution, which suspected it was authentic and filed a complaint with the tax authorities.

However, Anfang assures that he was vaccinated and scanned the certificate at the pharmacy, as is customary in Germany.
