ULast week, an American real estate agent was showing the house to an African American and his 15-year-old son when they looked out to see police surrounding the Wyoming, Michigan home with weapons at the ready.

According to CNN, a neighbor warned the authorities, indicating that the suspect, who had been detained in the house a week earlier, was returning.

However, the neighbor was wrong. Inside the house were real estate agent Eric Brown, father Roy Thorne, and their son Samuel. They agreed on this visit the day before.

All were released after being identified, but not before they were ordered to leave the residence with their hands up and handcuffed. Roy was briefly separated from his son Samuel and placed in the back seat of various patrol cars.

When asked if he felt discriminated against, Eric Brown replied: “At that moment, I definitely felt it.” Brown says it’s hard to find an excuse for the level of force he calls a “tactical” response.

In a press release on Friday, the Wyoming Department of Public Safety indicated that it had conducted an internal investigation and concluded that “race played no role in the way our officers treated people,” ensuring that agents “responded appropriately.”

“Unfortunately, innocent people were handcuffed, but our agents responded fairly and in accordance with department policy based on information available at the time,” they said.
