However, in two places, in the region of the crater known as Seita, the rocks appear to have formed underground and during the slow cooling of a thick layer of magma (a mass of molten minerals). Seita rocks have a composition similar to some Martian meteorites and are composed primarily of olivine (a group of minerals common on Earth that can be greenish in color and contain silicates of magnesium and iron).
From another area of the crater, called the Meuse, igneous rocks were removed that appear to have been formed by faster cooling and are richer in pyroxene (a group of minerals containing silicates of magnesium, iron, and calcium).
According to the authors of the study published today, the Maaz rocks may have been part of the upper layer of the magma lake that filled the crater and slowly cooled as it overlies the exposed rock layer in the Seita area.
Another accepted hypothesis is that the igneous rocks of the Meuse may be the result of a later volcanic eruption.
According to research, both Seita and Maaz rocks show changes caused by exposure to liquid water, albeit in different ways. The Maaz rocks contain pockets of minerals that may have condensed from brine (water saturated with salt), while the Seita rocks have reacted with carbonated water (sparkling water).
