UN mission in Iraq calls for ‘urgent solutions to political crisis’
“Meaningful dialogue between all Iraqi parties is more relevant than ever. Recent events have demonstrated the risk of rapid escalation in a tense political environment,” the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) warned in a statement.
“We call on all participants (…) to immediately come to an agreement on solutions,” added UNAMI.
The domestic political crisis escalated on Saturday when supporters of Shiite leader Muqtada Sadr occupied parliament in protest against a candidacy for a new head of government proposed by rival pro-Iranian factions.
Today, for the fifth day in a row, hundreds of Sadr supporters continue to occupy parliament, the AFP news agency reported.
On Wednesday, the “Sadrist” current called on supporters to leave the half-cycle and another large hall of Parliament, offering to set up camp in front of the building and in nearby gardens until Friday.
In an attempt to overcome the crisis, Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazimi, who is in charge of current affairs, has proposed a “national dialogue”.
The political situation in Iraq has stalled since October 2021. Several months of contacts and discussions prevented the election of a new President of the Republic and Prime Minister.
“Iraq cannot afford to engage in dialogue without solutions,” UNAMI stressed. “Iraq is facing a long list of internal challenges: it is in dire need of economic reform, efficient public services and a federal budget,” the UN mission continued.
In the absence of a new government, Iraq, which generates 90% of its income from oil exports, has yet to approve a 2022 budget.
The government is currently constrained by the provisions of the 2021 budget, set at a price of a barrel of crude oil that is well below what is currently set on the market, implying important restraints on government spending.
To meet the most pressing needs, parliament voted in June for an emergency funding law. This legislation includes the purchase of energy from abroad, as well as grain, to ensure the country’s “food security”.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Kazimi met with President Barham Saleh and the two stressed the importance of “ensuring the security and stability” of the country.
