The creation of the catalog would not have been possible without the coordinated collection of thousands of chimpanzee fecal samples by the Pan-African Program (PanAf) at 48 locations, the study said in a press release. The “hunt” for animal waste had to be very fast to ensure the freshness of the material collected from the forests. Thereafter, the samples were stored in ethanol and then dried so that they could be preserved for many years after collection.

“Stalas are complex specimens because they contain very little host DNA, typically 1 to 3%. And even this DNA is highly degraded and fragmented. The authors of the study now believe these protocols could be used to study different primates or even other endangered species.
