This Saturday in Porto, the still chairman of the PSD announced that his political life ends with the election of a new chairman of the party, for whom he voted at the headquarters of the district. Rui Rio also left a guarantee to journalists that he leaves the leadership “with a clear conscience.”
“My political future ended here. Paragraph point,” the Social Democrat leader replied after exercising his right to vote in an election that will decide who will succeed him, whether Luis Montenegro or Jorge Moreira da Silva.
Assuring himself that he was “much calmer than on other occasions,” Rui Rio announced that “in a month” he would be “completely relieved of a number of duties” and would leave “with a clear conscience.”
When asked whether he would be able to combine rest with work in the time remaining before leaving office, he answered in the affirmative, specifying that “the most tiring thing was not to be a deputy, but to be the chairman of the party” and that it would be “a little longer.”
Rui Rio sidestepped the issue of the lack of political debate between the two party leader candidates, preferring to hope that the SDP “continues to grow” after today’s election results.
Until 17:00, according to information from the party, “about 30% of the 1074 registered members of Porto” voted.
