It has been several months since Google announced that it was discontinuing Drive File Stream and Drive Backup & Sync. Just at the beginning of the year, Google promised to release a new version of Google Drive for the desktop.
A new version is available and it’s better than ever. Google Drive for PC has replaced Startup & Sync.
Google Drive, in addition to storing files, also has a cloud, which many users choose to sync their files with each other across multiple computers. The cloud is also spreading to platforms such as smartphones and PCs.
Synchronization is one of the tools most admired by users, but the older version already needed updates. This new update will keep your Drive files in sync with your PC or Mac.
Google is finally making the new version available gradually, this same version has some features like:
- Upload and sync photos and videos from Google Photos and / or Google Drive;
- Synchronize external storage devices with the cloud, including flash drives and external hard drives;
- Manage file sharing on your PC by saving files to your local device, providing faster access to your content on another device.

This version is for desktop computers. Google decided to update this proposal and create a new tool. Thus, it will be integrated into the new Desktop Drive with backup and sync functionality and Drive File Stream.
Google in Publication provided more details on how moving files to the new Disk would work.
- Starting July 19, 2021, the Startup & Sync section will offer a guide to help users move to the new Drive.
- Starting August 18, 2021: All users in Startup and Sync mode will begin receiving notifications asking them to go to Drive.
- Effective October 1, 2021: Anyone who will use Startup & Sync after this date will no longer be able to sign in. To continue syncing with Drive and / or Google Photos, users need to go to Drive.
The change will be required as the backup and sync will fail on October 1st, so don’t wait until the last minute.
