What are Apple passwords and how will they replace passwords?

(Pocket-lint) – Discussing updates to the Safari browser at WWDC in June 2022, Apple announced a new security feature – or credentials – it’s working on called Passkeys, which is designed to work across platforms. Apple said it is working with developers, the FIDO alliance and industry partners like Microsoft and Google to create a password-free future, and Passkeys is key to that vision. Here’s everything you need to know about the new credentials, including exactly how they can replace passwords forever.

What are Apple passwords and how can they replace passwords?

During its WWDC 2022 keynote, Apple said it “helped create the next generation of credentials that are more secure, easier to use, and designed to replace passwords.”

POCKET VIDEO OF THE DAY

Access keys are a type of credential that uses “cryptographic methods”. Basically, it uses the biometric features built into your Apple devices like Touch ID or Face ID to keep your online accounts secure. In the demo, Apple showed you how to quickly create and use a Touch ID or Face ID passkey on an Apple device. When you use an app or website that is compatible with Apple Passkeys, you’ll be able to create an account and sign in to those services with just your fingerprint or face. All you have to do is authenticate and you’re done.

During the passwordless demo, Apple showed how passwords are backed up in iCloud Keychain and work on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV with end-to-end encryption. You can even sign in to websites and apps on third-party devices using your iPhone or iPad. You need to scan the QR code and use Touch ID or Face ID to authenticate.

How do Apple passwords work and are they really secure?

Apple has stated that when users create a password, a unique digital key is created that only works for the website it was created for. Access keys are based on the Web Authentication API (WebAuthn).

It is a standard that uses public key cryptography instead of passwords for authentication on websites and applications. They are stored on the device, not on the web server. It is also a password replacement that uses Touch ID or Face ID for biometric verification. Therefore, instead of entering a long password, you will be prompted to authenticate with Touch ID or Face ID.

As a result, the company stated that the passkey could not be phishing as the passkey never leaves their Apple device. Hackers also can’t trick you into sharing your access key on a fake website, and they can’t be exposed because nothing is stored on the web server. Passwords work across apps and are securely synced across Apple devices using iCloud Keychain.

Which devices will support Apple Passkeys – is it only Apple?

You can use passwords to sign in to apps and websites from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and even third-party devices.

  • On your Mac, you can sign in with a password using your Touch ID or Face ID
  • On your iPhone, you can sign in with a passcode using your Touch ID or Face ID
  • On iPad, you can sign in with a passcode using Touch ID or Face ID.
  • On Apple TV and non-Apple TVs, you can sign in with a passkey using your iPhone or iPad! Apple said you can sign into an app or website by scanning a QR code and then signing in with Touch ID or Face ID.

Recall that in May 2022, Google and Microsoft announced that they had joined forces with Apple to expand support for passwordless login across mobile, desktop and browser devices. All three companies have said they intend to support the new passwordless authentication standard set by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium within the next year.

When will Apple Passkeys be available for use?

The passwords were announced during a Safari demo as part of the announcement of macOS Ventura, a major update to the Mac operating system. Presumably, passkeys will also be available on iOS 16 and iPadOS 16. All of these software updates were released as beta versions this summer, with final versions coming to consumers this fall. Apple’s next event is scheduled for September 7, 2022, so passwords could be released in mid-September.

Gmail: How to Detect a Viral Attachment and Avoid It

When it comes to email, there are several ways an attack can reach a victim. Dangerous links, persuasive language, and infected attachments are all elements used to scam people. In the same way, confidential data and money are stolen. So how do you avoid becoming a victim? In this article, we will explain how to detect and avoid virus attachment in Gmail, which actually applies to any email client.

Gmail: How to Detect a Viral Attachment and Avoid It

Receive attachments daily very often. The documents, audio files and images are often attached to these emails. But not all attachments we receive are necessarily good.

Malicious attachments are those that are used to spread malware onto someone’s device. Cyber attacks need vectors to spread these dangerous programs. This can be done in several ways. Dangerous investments – the most popular way.

However, when a victim downloads a malicious attachment, they are actually downloading malware onto the device. Depending on the type of malware, it can affect the machine in different ways. Some less bad, some worse. However, the consequences of downloading a malicious attachment are severe in most cases.

    Signs of a Dangerous Attachment

For everything he can do, it is important to identify threats.

First, it is important to analyze the type of files

When we receive any attachment via email, we can see the extension or suffix of the file. There are many different file types, most of which are .jpg, .zip, or .pdf. While there are no definitively malicious file types, there are some that are most commonly used to spread malware.

The main types of suspicious file attachments are .exe, .vbs, .scr, .cmd, and .js. It is these types of files that can be used to spread malware.

Pay attention to the content of the email

The content of the email may also indicate whether a particular attachment is malicious. For example, if you receive an email where the sender claims to have attached a document but an MP3 attachment, then you are most likely dealing with a false attachment. This is to put it mildly.

    check sender

The key step is to verify the sender’s email address. An attacker cannot replicate and use a trusted source address, but will try to create very similar addresses.

For example, an attacker might slightly change the name of the company in the address (for example, “w0rten” instead of “worten”). When receiving any type of email from a new sender, be sure to take a close look at the address.

Will smartphones do away with cameras?

    Published

    on

How many people do you see on the street with a special camera in their hands? Probably very few, especially since smartphones have begun to offer shooting quality at least comparable to a DSLR.

However, in terms of quality, despite the great strides made by Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, etc., the truth is that a good camera still outperforms any high-end smartphone. At least for a while!

Do smartphones have what it takes to complete the cameras?

Thus, Sony is no longer the only giant in the mobile technology world who believes that smartphones have what it takes to surpass the image quality of digital SLR cameras in the near future. After all, Judd Heap, VP of Camera Product Management at Qualcomm, seems to share a very similar sentiment. You know why?

Because the capabilities of sensors continue to grow, and in fact the level of development and innovation in this area is much higher than in the rest of the photographic industry.

    What’s the secret?

    S22 Ultra, Vivo, X80 Pro

Apparently, the potential lies in the level of processing that exists in the world of smartphones, especially in the higher ranges. After all, compared to the most powerful cameras on the shelves, be it Sony, Canon or Nikon, any high-end smartphone is at least 10 times more powerful in terms of processing power.

Computing power, which, as you understand, has only increased.

Big brands don’t want to fight smartphones.

As you may know, Canon has already announced the end of its DSLR lineup, and it looks like Nikon is joining the same train with its focus on mirrorless cameras.

In short, the greats of this world know that it is impossible to fight the practicality that smartphones offer.

So what about the megapixel war? This is an obstacle to evolution!

A Qualcomm expert believes that this new numbers war in the world of smartphones is useless, and that for a good development of the market, it would be a good idea to bet on sensors between 40 and 50MP.

A curious proposition, as Samsung will make a big and ugly 200MP bet from next year on its top of the range Galaxy S23 Ultra. Here we must take into account that more megapixels does not necessarily mean larger sensors. Pixels will be smaller, and for this reason, they may have difficulty getting light through. In the near future, it is very likely that the maximum sensor size for smartphones will not exceed one inch (1 inch).

Besides, what do you think of all this? Do you think that cameras will die, remaining only for professionals? Share your opinion with us in the comment box below.
