V. Guimarães will sue Iago for defamation: “Statements are pitiful”

The Portimonense striker took the flag and pointed it at the fans of V. Guimarães, saying later that he had a reaction to “racists who prejudicedly spit and scolded” some of the Brazilian’s teammates.

Antonio Miguel Cardoso, president of V. Guimarães, announced that the Victorian club would sue Portimonense striker Iago Carrielo for defamation. In a 2-1 victory between the two sides on Sunday, the Brazilian striker scored the winning goal and celebrated in a controversial way by aiming a corner flag at the Guimarães fans as if pointing at a gun.

The next day, justifiably, through social mediastating that he did not “shoot” fans and that he only had reactions to “racists who prejudicedly spit and scolded” some teammates.

President Minho considers the statements “pathetic,” “a collage to racism.” “We are going to sue the player for defamation. I am stunned by the report of the League delegate (Goncalo Almeida) for not giving due weight to the player’s performance. Sometimes I get the feeling that the League does not want to promote the sporting spectacle,” Antonio Miguel Cardoso told O JOGO.
