Samsung foldable devices pave the way for a more sustainable future

The Mobile eXperience business line has made progress in its quest to do more with less through the Galaxy for the Planet initiative.

The South Korean giant has announced its progress towards its 2025 sustainability goals for its MX (Mobile eXperience) business. Key initiatives include the development and use of recycled materials in products, the development of more sustainable packaging, and the reduction of e-waste, giving new life to older Samsung Galaxy devices.

Since the announcement of the Galaxy for the Planet initiative in the August 2021 issue of Unpacked, Samsung has been working hard to create, recycle and reuse resources that would otherwise become hazardous waste, thereby minimizing its impact on the environment and using innovation to save the planet. Samsung designed the new Galaxy Z series and Galaxy Buds2 Pro with abandoned fishing nets that might otherwise end up in the ocean.

It all started with the integration into the Galaxy S22 series in February 2022. There are currently eleven Galaxy devices using salvaged fishing nets, including the Galaxy Book2 Pro series and the Galaxy Tab S8 series. By converting discarded fishing nets into high-performance material for Galaxy technology, Samsung is helping to minimize the impact of plastic pollution: 640,000 tons of fishing nets are discarded every year and pollute the oceans.

In addition to fishing nets, Samsung has incorporated other sustainable materials and bio-based polymers into 90% of Galaxy devices launched last year. In Galaxy Buds2 Pro, more than 90% of the product is already made from recycled materials.

This process requires sophisticated engineering and technical skills to ensure the overall quality, safety and reliability of all new materials used in Samsung’s innovative technologies.
