Macau University launches Portuguese language learning platform

Macau University launches Portuguese language learning platform

“BUT The pandemic has really heightened the importance of new technologies applied in learning, especially in language teaching. Let’s just say it was already an area that was growing and accelerating with the pandemic,” explained João Paulo Pereira, professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of San José.

“It aims to solve one of the biggest difficulties for those who learn Portuguese as a non-native language, and which is related to the understanding of oral texts. This is a platform specifically for audiovisual materials, organized by language level (A1 to C1) and topics, with suggestions for activities aimed at developing oral comprehension, since, to my knowledge, other similar activities in the context of teaching and learning There is no Portuguese language,” he added.

The platform, which is scheduled to launch this Monday, will be available to hundreds of students in the Chinese-Portuguese Translation and General Portuguese courses, as well as open to all faculty and students outside the university.

“The didactic approach used is different from the usual one. It is not limited to traditional truth and falsehood exercises and filling in the gaps. (…) At the end of the book there are, for example, questionnaires for self-reflection each didactic sequence in which the student is faced with the strategies he has used or not (…) Finally, I would like to emphasize the possibility for the student to create his own exercises ( song) and the platform automatically generates the exercise,” the professor explained.

Audiovisual resources range from documentaries, video clips, short films and news, and are “genuine materials (…) created specifically to teach and present the language as it is used”.

“Portuguese learners want to understand what they see on TV or on their mobile phone, or in relation to the music they hear. One aspect that I would like to point out is the fact that there are many videos with subtitles and that the student also has access to the transcript, which helps to understand a lot,” emphasized João Paulo Pereira.

The creation of the platform is aimed primarily at “the specific development of oral comprehension competence as well as visual literacy”.

“The platform can be used in a logic class, I would even say as a language lab, but it can also support classes. It depends on how the teacher uses it. At the same time, the idea is for the student to become more autonomous in terms of their own learning, using the opportunities that technology offers them,” he added.

The starting point is Macau, but the Portuguese-speaking dimension is present in the design of the project.

“This is a project made in Macau and for Macau first. There is a lot of content about Macau. And there are videos with subtitles even in Chinese. Portuguese-speaking countries are presented in terms of content. If we want Portuguese to be a pluricentric and global lingua franca, teaching materials must reflect this diversity and versatility,” he concluded.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
