Senator Alessandro Vieira says Aras is "a politician dressed as PGR"

Senator Alessandro Vieira (Cidadania-SE) accused Augusto Aras of being “a politician dressed like the Attorney General of the Republic” during his Roda Viva program on TV Cultura tonight. The statement was made by the congressman when he was asked if Aras could bring the Covid CPI to “pizza”.

No, I think you have mechanisms to resist the possible inaction of the prosecutor Augusto Aras, who is a private criminal case subordinate to the state one. I believe it has never been used at this level except for PGR. But when you have a figure like Augusto Aras, a politician dressed as the attorney general of the republic, a politician in the worst sense … you have to think about the worst alternatives you have. Senator Alessandro Vieira during Roda Viva

Appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), Augusto Aras took office in September for his second two-year term as head of the PGR (Office of the Attorney General) following a Senate hearing. For the re-appointment of Aras to the post of PGR, 55 votes were cast and only 10 against.

In his speech of about 20 minutes, he advocated the unity of the judiciary and respect for the Constitution, stressing that the PGR would not be used for political disputes or persecution. The PGR also reaffirmed its “loyalty” to the Constitution and democracy and defined its first two years in office as “impartial”.

Vieira participated in the program along with another colleague, Senator Fabiano Contarato (Rede-ES). Both have become active figures at meetings of the CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry), which is investigating the possible actions and inactions of the Bolsonaro government during the covid-19 pandemic.
