School in the Interior SP Implements Portuguese and Creole Textbook for the Integration of Haitian Students | Sorokaba and Jundiai

School in the Interior SP Implements Portuguese and Creole Textbook for the Integration of Haitian Students | Sorokaba and Jundiai

In an effort to introduce Haitian students and their families to the Portuguese language and Brazilian culture, the public school in Votorantima (SP) has produced an information booklet in Portuguese and Creole, the language of Haiti.

Keila Dolca Emil, 9, was born in Haiti and came to live in Brazil. When she came to class, she had no idea what the teacher was talking about.

“It was a little awkward, you know? I didn’t know anything, but I studied, put words together, read, and then I knew how to speak, ”he says.

The Sorocaba (SP) region is home to some 500 Haitian families. Gradually, they try to learn Portuguese in order to communicate better. In addition to being away from home and not speaking Portuguese, the cultural isolation that affects their daily lives isolates many families.

“First I bought a dictionary. I just watch TV and then we can learn, ”explains Jean Junel Emil.

This is why educator Adriana Sabino decided to take the words that are so confusing, streamline them in both languages and put an end to any difficulties.

“We have six students enrolled who are Haitians. We have one Venezuelan and one Colombian, but the greater flow was from Haitians and because of these difficulties in communicating with the family. So, social worker Vera Lucia, coordinator Vera Christina and Vera Christina, coordinator and psychologist Natalia sat down to talk: what can we do? We went to study laws, legislation to find out the needs of families, and the project was born like this, ”she says.

The school in Votorantim is creating a booklet in Portuguese and Creole for the integration of Haitian students.

The booklet contains important information about the health care system, legislation, safety and education. Translating this from Creole was the mission of the Kayton Institute in Action.

“When you talk about how the school came to the institute so that we could translate, and the institute was very happy, because this is the realization of a guarantee of rights, this includes something else, it is to feel what the other is feeling. When we Brazilians speak, they don’t understand, which is why inclusion is important for the educational process in Brazil, ”explains social worker and founder of the organization Carla Cristina Portela de Jesus.

The brochure is handed over to the parents and they can take it home. In the classroom to serve Haitian children, teachers will also learn Creole, starting with simple phrases such as “good morning,” “good afternoon,” and “happy Children’s Day.”

“The next steps are precisely to teach the teachers some of the children’s phrases, such as ‘going to the toilet’, ‘drinking water’ and other important things. Also educate our students so that they understand each other’s culture, ”adds Adriana.

“The person who comes doesn’t recognize, he’s just from France and doesn’t know how to speak Portuguese, then they ask to go to the bathroom, and no one understands. I think it matters, ”Keila concludes.
