IMF revises Portugal's GDP growth to 4.4% in 2021 and 5.1% in 2022 - Environment

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised up its forecast for the growth of the Portuguese economy this year and next year. In 2021, GDP is expected to grow by 4.4%, and in 2022 the rate of economic activity will increase to 5.1%. The figures were released on Tuesday in the World Economic Outlook.

In April, the IMF predicted more modest growth this year (3.9%) and next (4.8%). However, compared to the government’s goals, the IMF remains a little more cautious than the finance minister.

João Leau expects GDP to grow by 4.6% this year and 5.5% in 2022. IMF data for 2021 is also slightly more cautious than data from the Public Finance Council and Banco de Portugal, which updated their forecasts in September and October, respectively. They are in line with CFP expectations for 2022 (Banco de Portugal has no updated forecasts for next year).

If IMF forecasts are confirmed, Portugal will grow more slowly than the eurozone this year, despite a deeper recession than the 2020 average. The average for the single currency is expected to rise by 5%. The Portuguese economy is expected to grow slightly more next year, as the euro will grow on average by only 4.3%.

On the labor market, the IMF expects a residual improvement in the unemployment rate. After 7% registered in 2020, the fund will decline to 6.9% in 2021 and 6.7% in 2022. Inflation is expected to be 1.2% this year and 1.3% next year. The outlook for 2022 is slightly higher than that of the government, which predicts 0.9%, using this figure as a benchmark for increasing civil servants.

Less balanced economy

According to the IMF, the current account balance will worsen this year and next. After a deficit of 1.1% of GDP in 2020, a 1.7% deficit is expected to be recorded in 2021, increasing the imbalance to 2.1% in 2022.

The IMF does not provide a detailed analysis of the Portuguese economy, but the numbers may reflect a slower recovery in exports than imports, given the different pace of recovery in different sectors of activity.

In order to promote the prevention of breast cancer, the most common type in the world, surpassing lung cancer, Real Hospital Português is running the Pink October campaign. Early diagnosis is essential for quality of life, successful treatment, and increased chances of a cure. Thus, the October Rosa do Real Hospital Português will be divided into three areas: social action, an educational campaign and a running and walking circle.

With the completion of 50 biopsies in patients from the public network, the institution will facilitate access to the main examination for the diagnosis of breast cancer. “We will positively impact the lives of these patients with our work. Real Hospital Português is a center for the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and together we will take an unprecedented initiative by providing services to the community,” emphasizes Luciana Limongi, a mastologist. The campaign will be held in partnership with the Real Instituto de Mastologia (RIMA), Real Patologia and Real Imagem, which have recently received the PADI Seal – Accreditation Program in Diagnostic Imaging.

Rosa’s October Run and Walk Scheme aims to warn of the importance of early breast cancer detection and encourage physical activity. According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), about 30% of all cancers diagnosed in Brazil can be avoided through lifestyle changes. “Behavioral risk factors such as obesity and lack of physical activity are directly linked to the occurrence of breast cancer. That is why it is so important to develop healthy habits,” emphasizes the mastologist. The sporting event will take place on October 29, starting at 16:00, from Cais da Alphandega and will cover a 5 km route. Registration is open to the public at soucorredor.com.br.
