Portuguese researcher discovered how to slow the aging of the spine

Portuguese researcher discovered how to slow the aging of the spine

A researcher at the University of Minho (UMinho) has discovered a treatment that slows the aging of the intervertebral discs, which is one of the main causes of back pain.
In a statement, UMinho researcher and Dr. Emanuel Novais explains that this is a treatment with “senolytic drugs” in which the good cells are retained and the “bad” ones are removed, which ultimately delays the degeneration of the “discs”.

According to Emanuel Novais, currently available solutions and treatments “are still insufficient and do not always give the best results.”

“The solutions available are pain relief with analgesics or, in more severe cases, surgery. In other words, there are no drugs that can prevent the progression of the disease and become a therapeutic solution, ”he says.

The researcher, defending his doctoral dissertation and conducting research at the Thomas Jefferson University (USA), decided to study various ways to facilitate intervertebral disc degeneration.

According to him, this was the first study in which long-term treatment with senolytic drugs was carried out in mice.

“The results show that animals treated with these drugs have a lower degree of intervertebral disc degeneration with age. In addition, they significantly improved muscle strength, blood inflammation, and bone quality. Finally, we did not observe any side effects that could alert us to the lack of safety with these drugs, ”he says.

For Emanuel Nova, the “great key” of the project was senolytic drugs, or rather a cocktail of two substances (dasatinib and quercetin), which removed and reduced the aging cells in the disc and thus reduced the stress that these cells were induced locally.

“In other words, by forcing the good cells to stay and removing the bad ones, we end up delaying disc degeneration,” he adds.

Emanuel Nova recently completed his doctoral dissertation, in which this work also corresponds, as a result of the doctorate / doctoral degree, a program in which medical students from Minho University can take a break from the course and earn a doctorate at two universities in the state (Thomas Jefferson and Columbia ), having the opportunity to complete courses as doctors and doctoral students.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
