Portugal's Big Brother has gay and trans leading men

On Sunday (12), the premiere of the new edition of Big Brother took place in Portugal. For several weeks, TVI has been hiding a secret about who will host the reality show. The discovery surprised: two openly gay presenters, Claudio Ramos and Manuel Luis Gucha were chosen.

Competitors include 24-year-old black trans man Laurenzo Barcelos. He works as an assistant in a family restaurant and dreams of becoming an actor. In the first conversation in the confessional, the brother told about his condition. “I want to be a source of inspiration for transsexuals like me and the entire LGBT community,” he said. “I want to reveal the mentality.”

In the 21st season of Big Brother Brazil, with over 300 members, BBB11 featured the only trans representative, model Ariadna Arantes. Rejected immediately, she was expelled first and received no support in the resume vote. In the recent issue of “No Limite”, he again felt like an object of transphobia.

The Portuguese Big Brother also includes a gay cis man, 32-year-old architect Bruno, human rights defender and LGBTQ activist. This sexual diversity in reality TVI contradicts the Portuguese conservatism regarding the fundamental rights of non-heterosexual citizens.

Last year, the network conducted research on sensitive topics such as divorce, sex before marriage, and abortion. Most of the respondents were progressive. But he showed his conservatism on the gay civil union: 52% against.

Even more reject the adoption of children by homosexual couples – 68%. Despite this resistance, laws are already benefiting stakeholders. In Portugal, gay people have been able to marry since 2010, and since 2016, gay parental adoption has come into force.
