The champion who chose to be Portuguese

The champion who chose to be Portuguese

Pedro Pichardo is a unique case among naturalized people, but he never deserved the stigma created after his arrival. His presence among us is a source of pride for Portugal.

The Portuguese mission of these Games has a list of naturalized athletes, but of different backgrounds. In Tokyo, the children of immigrants are mixed, descendants of immigrants who chose our country, athletes who moved from another country to develop with better living and training conditions, and finally a champion who deserted and decided to become Portuguese. Pichardo is not the first naturalized person to take the Olympic podium (we had Francis Obiquelu and Nelson Evora before him), but from a sporting point of view, he is a unique case for a country that has never entered the star naturalization market. it’s a terrible practice where all federations try to stop it.

Fleeing Cuba, where he was not allowed to have a father as a coach – and the result of these Games proves that the Picardo family was right, but the Cuban federation was not, now the champion has become the target of a kind of “auction”. , accepting the offer of Portugal and Benfica against several others and putting forward naturalization as a condition as early as 2017 in order not to be prevented from competing for the rules that will change the sport at the beginning of 2018.

It was a clear and flawless process, but it did not prevent stigma from immediately emerging. In some cases because of clubbing, in some because of pure nationalism or racism, mostly because he came to replace Nelson Evora at Benfica, and the Olympic champion Beijing 2008 has always been highly appreciated.

The low-key nature of Pichardo, who appears surrounded by his family in national competitions, does not develop strong friendships in athletics, and the communication policies of large clubs, limiting interviews and public speaking, did the rest. Until yesterday, few Portuguese really knew their new champion. Many had a bad idea of him.

It is no coincidence that everything changed in two hours. His Olympic title arrived with a fantastic spectacle – the third largest jump in Games history! – and then in several beautiful interviews this champion of Portugal, admitting that he was embarrassed, made himself felt like never before. He loves cod à Brás, sings the anthem, apologizes for the pronunciation, does not want to argue with Evora, and even said that it was his father Jorge, and not he who chose Portugal – because of the climate and because there are few Cubans – a confession that will be made few.

Pichardo and I am writing in the first person because I cannot speak for others, I am very proud that you are Portuguese!

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
