€ 20 million project

Deucalion is the new Portuguese eco-friendly supercomputer from EuroHPC, a joint initiative of the European Commission on High Performance Computing. It will be launched in 2022 at MACC, Avepark, Guimaraes, the largest of the four modern computing operations centers in Portugal, owned by FCT and under scientific and operational coordination from UMinho.

During his presidency of the EU Council, Manuel Haitor said in February that he wants Portugal and Europe to lead the way in green computing. It has announced € 20 million (seven million from the European Commission) for the Deucalion installation, symbolizing a sustainable energy community that relies primarily on renewable sources. “On June 18, we will be bringing together supercomputers installed at European level as an example of what is important for the distribution and sharing of unique infrastructures across Europe,” said Manuel Haitor.

EuroHPC participated in the acquisition of five supercomputers petascale, each with a performance of about ten out of petaflops or 10 billion calculations per second. This measure is considered relevant to European cohesion and competitiveness, given the development of these technological innovations in the region where they are being established. In fact, in September 2020, the European Commission proposed an additional investment of € 8 billion for the next generation of supercomputers and quantum technologies.

pioneer role

MACC was born in 2017 thanks to a memorandum between FCT, UMinho and the University of Texas at Austin (Utah, Austin, USA). The first MACC supercomputer – Bob, provided by UT Austin, increased the country’s computing power by 10 times and expanded the forms of scientific and business cooperation. UMinho is pioneering data science. Nationally, he excelled by launching a course with a computer science section (1977), the first email (1985), the first internet connection and home page in Portugal (1991), the longest-running online community (Moosaico, 1994), I WWW Conference (1995), the first LAN Party (2001) or, more recently, Quanta Lab (with INL, 2016), MACC (2017) and the largest associated laboratory in the country and the only one in artificial intelligence (LASI, 2021). The e-citizen card and the StayAway Covid app are among numerous research projects developed.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
