“The Portuguese people must recognize that we are the benchmark on the trampoline.”

"The Portuguese people must recognize that we are the benchmark on the trampoline."

Diogo Abreu closed the qualifier with a better performance than Pedro Ferreira at the World Championships in Brescia, Italy.

Portuguese Diogo Abreu, who today qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, postponed until this summer, told Luce that the qualification is “a great joy” and that it shows the level of trampoline jumping in Portugal.

“It is a great joy, it was a very long process that began in 2018 and ended with this World Cup. Both Pedro Ferreira and Diogo Ganchino would get a seat in Portugal. At this world championship, I could change everything, but all three will get a place in Portugal, which shows the level of the “springboard” in the country, the athlete emphasized in Luce’s statements.

Diogo Abreu closed the qualifier with a better performance than Pedro Ferreira at the World Championships in Brescia, Italy.

On Friday, the pair secured Portugal’s springboard spot, which Diogo Abreu won today, finishing sixth in the individual final with 56.805 points, much higher than Pedro Ferreira’s eighth-place finish (17.895).

For a gymnast to “get ahead” of his teammates is “great pride” in the level presented. “I am very happy and now I am working to represent Portugal in the best possible way,” he said.

This is a performance, and even if it is “always difficult to make promises,” it can pass successfully in the finals because it believes it has a “level to do it”.

“The Portuguese people must recognize that on the springboard we are the international benchmark and are fighting with the best, with the best conditions and resources, such as China or Belarus,” he said.

Diogo Abreu, 16th at Rio2016, and Pedro Ferreira, both of Sporting, have access to today’s final, finishing sixth and ninth respectively in qualifying with 111,395 and 109,720 points.

A fifth consecutive presence at the 2020 Tokyo Trampoline Competition increases Portugal’s representation in modality after Filipa Martins qualified in artistic gymnastics.

The best result for the Portuguese in trampoline jumping at the Olympic Games was achieved by Nuno Merino in Athens in 2004, finishing in sixth place.

The Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro de Braga is the first Portuguese in the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba.

Maestro Filipe Cunha, Artistic Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Braga, has been invited to conduct the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, as announced today.

According to a statement sent by O MINHO, “he will be the first Portuguese conductor to conduct this orchestra in its entire history.”

In addition to this orchestra, the maestro will also work with the Lyceo Mozarteum de la Habana Symphony Orchestra.

The concerts will take place on 4 and 12 March 2023 at the National Theater of Cuba in Havana.

In the words of the maestro, quoted in the statement, “these will be very beautiful concerts with difficult but very complex pieces” and therefore he feels “very motivated”.

From the very beginning, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 will be performed by an Italian pianist (Luigi Borzillo), whom the maestro wants to bring to Portugal later this year. In the same concert, Mendelshon’s First Symphony will be performed.

Then, at the second concert, in the company of the Mexican clarinetist Angel Zedillo, he will perform the Louis Sfora Concerto No. 2. In this concert, the maestro also conducts Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.

“This is an international recognition of my work. An invitation that I accept with humility and great responsibility. I was surprised to learn that I would be the first Portuguese member of the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra. This is a very great honor,” the maestro said in a statement.

“I take with me the name of the city of Braga and Portugal with all the responsibility that goes with it, and I hope to do a good job there, leaving a good image and putting on great concerts. These will be very special concerts because, in addition to performing pieces that I love, especially Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, I will be directing two wonderful soloists who are also my friends. It will be very beautiful,” concludes Filipe Cunha.
