Delta Air Lines said Monday it will borrow $ 6.5 billion through its frequent flyer program, becoming the third airline to use loyalty platforms to support liquidity during the coronavirus crisis.

The airline plans to sell its senior secured notes and enter into a new line of credit, backed by its SkyMiles program. SkyMiles will lend Delta the net proceeds from the bond offering, although a portion will be deposited in a reserve account.

United Airlines announced in June plans to use its Frequent flyer programsMileagePlus to support the $ 5 billion loan. American Airlines said it also plans to use its program as collateral for a nearly $ 5 billion federal loan.

Delta shares rose 1.6% premarket after the company announced a new debt plan.

The Atlanta-based airline and its competitors have struggled to maintain liquidity as the coronavirus pandemic devastated travel demand this year. March’s $ 2 trillion CARES law set aside $ 25 billion in airline wages, which bans job cuts until October 1, and provided another $ 25 billion in federal loans. Delta said it had no plans to pursue the loan by joining Southwest Airlines and other sources of liquidity.
